Drupal Security Subscriptions

Given the increasing frequency of hacking attempts and security breaches on websites worldwide and here in SA, including many in the recent invasions on major systems like Apple’s iCloud, Adobe, and Dropbox, we are now offering a Security Update Subscription for Drupal websites that will allow us to keep your website up to date with security updates on a daily basis for a set monthly fee.

The number of hacks and breaches is becoming too intense to risk your website's safety.

Why do they do it?

We get asked this question very often, and the answer is simple - criminals either want your data or your server's capabilities. If your website contains sensitive information behind a log-in, hackers and crackers will try and get this and find a way to profit with it - whether it's credit card info or simply identity info. Usually though, there isn't this type of data on a website, so what they are then after is your server's capabilities. They can use it to surrepticiously host a fake banking website that can be used in email phishing scams to get people's login details for their online banking. Or, they can use your server's email-sending capability to send spam - your server then becomes part of a massive global network of zombie computers used to send out spam all the time.

The trouble with these last two is that they affect your website's reputation - it can get your server blacklisted for email sending, which will mean more of your ligitmate emails won't get to your clients. And your website may eventually be blacklisted itself, meaning that people's browsers will throw a warning up if people tryand visit it.

What if i don't have a Drupal website?

We are offering this service for Drupal websites only, because we have the tools necessary to do these updates daily on a large scale. We can quote you to bring your website on to a Drupal backend, which will give you the option of ensuring its always up to date.

Is this a Drupal only problem?

Any website or server can be hacked - one only needs to consider how large organizations like Dropbox, Apple, and Adobe are. Drupal sites are by no means less secure or more prone to attack - in fact, the Drupal community's security team is very proactive in searching for possible holes and plugging them up with regularly released updates.

Wordpress in particular is extremely easy to hack into - and their security team is not as quick to plug holes as the Drupal team is.

We therefore always recommend Drupal as our platform of preference - it offers excellent functionality, and the ability to keep it secure and up to date.

Although we ensure the websites we build for our clients are compatible with all browsers, we like to push the envelope on our own website. So we've made the decision to make use of a design that looks amazing in all browsers... except Internet Explorer. If you're still using IE, you need to change - the web has moved on from Internet Explorer, and you will get a safer, faster, and more enjoyable experience out of the Internet if you use anything other than IE. Have a look at BrowseHappy.com to choose a new browser. We recommend Google Chrome and Firefox.

(PS: Microsoft is working on a new web browser, and we're all holding thumbs that it will follow the web standards and display the web like everyone else does... correctly.)
